Olympic rowing & canoeing stars set to race in Adelaide

Adelaide will play host to Australia’s Olympic and Paralympic rowing and canoeing stars next month as part of a series of events showcasing these outdoor water sports.

Two rowing events and one canoe sprint event will be held in May and June, including two national championships and the Rowing Australia World Cup replica event – the last competition before the rowers head to the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The three events will bring more than 1,700 athletes, families, spectators and officials to South Australia over the next month.

The events are the 2021 Paddle Australia Canoe Sprint Championships, the 2021 Australian Masters Rowing Championships and the Rowing Australia World Rowing Cup 3 Simulation Regatta.

"The AMRC will bring Masters rowers from across the country to experience South Australia’s premier rowing venue, while June’s simulation regatta will be the last time Australians will be able to see our Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls compete on home soil before they depart into their various camps ahead of final selection for the Tokyo Games. We look forward to seeing many spectators on the banks of West Lakes watching the present and the future of Australian rowing in action."

Rowing Clubs and QR Codes

As a friendly reminder, all rowing clubs/ venues in Victoria are required to have in place a check in system for all visitors/ members that is automatically linked to Services Victoria. Record keeping continues to be an important tool for helping Victoria stay safe and stay open. The need for fast and accurate contact information for anyone who has been at a listed COVID-19 public exposure site is vital.

Therefore, Clubs are able to use either the free Victorian Government QR Code Service or Victorian Government Application Programming Interface linked digital record keeping system.

Details on how to set up your free code can be found here (https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/register-to-use-vic-gov-qr-code-service)

River Safety - Bow and Stern lights

Bow and Stern lights

With the dark mornings now upon us it is crucial that all rowers who are on the water (and coaches on bikes and powerboats) between sunset and sunrise all have adequate lighting for your safety and the safety of others.

Rowing boats, in restricted visibility and between sunset and sunrise, are required to exhibit;

  • Two all-round white lights, one attached to the boat at or near the forward or bow end, and one attached to the boat at or near the stern end.
  • Bow light - A continuous white light is considered acceptable if it is visible in clear conditions from a distance of 1 kilometre.
  • Stern light - A flashing white light is considered acceptable if it flashes at least once per second and is visible in clear conditions from a distance of 1 kilometre.
  • Not withstanding the above, it is considered acceptable for a light to be masked so as not to interfere with the vision of the vessel’s occupants, provided at least one light is visible from any direction (see diagram below)

Thanks to the Nagambie Community

Rowing Victoria and Rowing Australia would like to thank our local umpires, the Nagambie rowing community and long-term partner the Strathbogie Shire in their assistance with hosting the Australian Rowing Team at Nagambie Lakes this weekend as they continue their preparations for Tokyo.

As SIRC is unavailable as a result of the recent NSW flooding, the team’s World Cup Simulation regatta transferred to Nagambie at the last minute; so thanks to all for your cooperation and support.
