Vale  -  Reg McKay ( Life Member )

Dear members of Rowing Victoria,

'We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of former Rowing Australia President and Boat Race Official, Reginald ‘Reg’ McKay.

Reg McKay was made a Life Member of Rowing Victoria in 2020

A Life Member of Rowing Victoria (2020), Reg’s contribution to the sport of rowing, nationally and internationally, were enormous. He administered the sport of rowing at the highest levels, having been President of the then Australian Rowing Council (now Rowing Australia) from 1989 to 1994.

Prior to his role with the ARC, he was Chair of the Rowing Victoria Committee (1982-87), Rowing Victoria Councillor for the Amateur Australian Rowing Council (1982 to 1990) and previously held the presidency of his club, Footscray City Rowing Club. He began his rowing career coxing at Footscray City, and until recently continued to actively row at Banks Rowing Club.

He will be remembered by many alumni, in 1990, as President of Rowing Australia, for arranging for Professor Theo Koerner to be guest coach of the Australian Rowing Team. The work Professor Koerner contributed to the team environment, alongside Australia’s own coaches, ushered in a golden era for the sport in Australia.

Reg McKay, Professor Theo Koerner and Mike McKay

Reg became a World Rowing international umpire in 1977, and went on to officiate on eight World Rowing Juries, three Olympic Games (1980, 1984 and 1992) and a Commonwealth Games (1986). In 2011, he was awarded the Julius Patching Award for Official of the Year, from the Victorian Olympic Council.

While he officiated internationally, he also made a significant contribution to the Boat Race Official community in Australia, working at numerous Local, State and National regattas, as well as assisting at many National Selection Trials.

The father of two-time Olympic gold medallist, Mike McKay, he will be remembered for his passion for the sport and supporting athletes in their endeavours to compete nationally and internationally.

At his time of passing, Reg had been an accredited Boat Race Official for over 40 years. He was a servant of Australian rowing, like his friend and fellow BRO, the late Dr Stephen Hinchy, and will be deeply missed. The thoughts of everyone at RA are with his wife Sandy, sons Mike, David, John, daughter Sarah and all their family and friends.'

Rowing Victoria's Weekly Local Legend   -  James Marburg

This week's Local Legend is James Marburg from Melbourne University Boat Club (VIC)

James started his rowing in 1996 at St Patrick's College Ballarat. He raced in their first four in both 1999 and 2000. He finished his career at the London Olympics in 2012 - a very successful 16 years. He was a dual Olympian, Olympic Silver medal, World Championship silver and bronze medallist, Wilkinson Cup winner, and twice King's Cup winner.

Sporting Highlights - James was immediately drawn to his Olympic representation and medals and King's Cup wins. However, he also puts up there his three National Championship pair oared wins including one win against Drew Ginn and Duncan Free in 2006, two years before Ginn and Free took gold at the Beijing Olympic Games.

What does he like about the sport?

Everything. He credits the sport with giving him most of his best life skills - character, discipline, application, learning how to fail and succeed, learning the satisfaction gained from hard work, delayed satisfaction, and getting through adversity. He is a great advocate of the sport.

Congratulations James on a great rowing career and bring such fame to the sport.

Securing Your Regatta Marquee

A friendly reminder as we head into the busy regatta season that many regatta venues do not allow the use of pegs to secure your marquees/tents and they must be appropriately secured using adequate weights.

The Rowing Victoria Recommendations for the provision of weights to secure tent/marquees during events will be able to assist you in understanding which venues you are not allowed to use pegs and how much weight is required to safely secure your marquee.

Waterways and Safety

Let's Keep our waterways safe and be mindful of everyone out on the water during the Christmas period.

With the weather warming up, boat traffic will increase. Specifically for the Yarra, the number of commercial vessel journeys will grow, so please continue to be alert towards all river users. Please refresh your knowledge of the waterway rules, acknowledging the direction of travel and bridge arch use.

Megaphone Restrictions:

All coaches using megaphones are to abide by the restrictions below. Taking extra caution around residential areas is kindly appreciated.

We strongly recommend that clubs/schools transition to using radios and radio boxes rather than megaphones.
