Rowing Victoria Enews 30th July2021

A great Olympic Week.

It’s been described as the “Hour of Power”, Oarsome, a Gold Rush; you name it, but what a wonderful day (and week) of Australian and Victorian rowing success we’ve witnessed from afar.

Australia has arguably had its best Olympic rowing day in history on Wednesday, as we know bringing home 2 Gold and 2 Bronze medals and VIC rowers were thick in the medal action.

Kicked off by our own Lucy Stephan (MUBC), Rosie Popa (Banks RC) and Jessica Morrison (Mercantile RC) with Annabelle McIntyre from WA in the Women’s four, the flood gates then opened with another gold added by the Men’s Four and bronze in the Men’s Quad Scull, and the Women’s Quad Scull featuring our own Ria Thompson from Mercantile RC . A total of 4 Olympic rowing medals in the space of one hour with ongoing debates as to which Four is the new Oarsome Foursome!

Jessica narrowly missed qualifying for the A Finals in the women’s pair, ultimately winning with Annabelle the B-Final. Amanda Bateman from Mercantile in her first Olympic campaign with Tara Rigney also won their B-Final in the Women’s double.

Having successfully made the medal races for both eights, our congratulations on your efforts in extremely hot fields go to Sarah Hawe, Katrina Werry (Mercs) and James Rook (Mercs) from the women’s 8 and Nicholas Lavery , Angus Widdicombe (Mercs), Simon Keenan (MUBC), Tim Masters, Josh Booth (MUBC), Jack O’Brien and Stuart Sim (MUBC) in the men’s 8.

The media jumped on board this week also with great coverage across the four main TV networks, radio and print; let alone significant social media coverage. This coverage will work to increase our profile through the state and ideally encourage the next generation of rowers to emerge.

Rowing Victoria congratulates all our 16 Tokyo 2020 Olympians, including reserve Rohan Lavery (MUBC), and those who have assisted them over their journeys to date; families, schools, friends, clubs and our volunteers. We are looking forward to (continuing) to celebrate their success and wish them safe trips home and manageable quarantine stints.

UPDATE

WE’RE BACK!

LOCKDOWN 5.0 EASED FROM 11.59PM TUESDAY 27 JULY.

Gratefully, on the advice of the State’s public health team, the State’s lockdown will be eased from 11:59pm on Tuesday 27 July.

Relevant to our community, the following opportunities now apply until 11.59pm on Tuesday 10 August.

Following confirmation today on a number of points from the Dept of Health and DJPR, please note the following

  • Rowing Clubs and waterways are now open for training. This means there is access to social rooms, change rooms, boats and/ or gyms.

  • COVID Check-in Marshals must ensure attendees check-in. This could be a coach or a crew member. It does not need to be a dedicated club member rostered to the task. The key issue is to ensure athletes QR Code check in and the Marshal is there to facilitate compliance. Single scullers/ solo club users can technically become their own Marshal.

  • As we are a Community Sport, numbers are restricted to a maximum of 100 per indoor space, working to a density quotient of 1 person per 4 square metres.

  • Competition allowed. Spectators not permitted
  • Face masks are mandatory and must always be carried and worn indoors and outdoors when not exercising.

  • Equipment is to be washed and disinfected after use.

Upon the return to our clubs, it is now vitally important that QR codes are implemented (and used) as part of your COVIDSafe plans to enable streamlined contact tracing to take place if required.

If further community outbreaks occur, we ask that you review the published exposure sites, their exposure windows, exposure Tiers and the indicated necessary action in efforts to keep the community safe.

With exposure sites likely through the state and our community this reiterates the importance to take caution and adhere to COVIDSafe protocols.

If you become knowingly exposed to the virus or end up attending any exposure sites, continue to follow public health advice and COVID-Safe hygiene practices.

Rowing Victoria will continue to monitor the situation and communicate with the community surrounding exposure sites and public health advice.

Stay safe, Stay Rowing!

Membership Renewal for 2021 - 2022

We are taking this opportunity to remind all clubs that you need to assign state memberships to your members in Rowing Manager.

This ensures that your members receive personal accident cover under the Rowing Victoria Insurance Program and benefit from Rowing Victoria's Maritime safety exemptions for pfd's.

This is part of the renewal of members for the new membership season which started on 1st July, 2021.

We also remind you that your members must have a competitive membership and need to have agreed to the Rowing Australia Terms and Conditions to be entered in regattas.

Remember to update your Club or School Office Bearers

We would appreciate Clubs and School’s updating details of their Office Bearers and other key roles in Rowing Manager preparatory to the 2021-22 season.

In Rowing Manager, click on Office Bearers & Contacts on the left hand menu bar under Club Administration to review and update your Club or Schools key contacts. Please also take the opportunity to review your System Administrators and Website Contacts details from the links also listed under Club Administration.
