The return of crew boats for all ages

Rowing Victoria is incredibly pleased to announce that after much discussion with Sports and Recreation Victoria and VicSport, the Guidance list of community sport prepared by Sport and Recreation Victoria has classified rowing as a non-contact sport. As such from the ‘Third Step’ of Victorian COVID-19 restrictions we are approved to return to training in crew boats for all ages.

Therefore, effective immediately rowers in Regional Victoria may return to crew rowing and Metropolitan Melbourne will be expected to join them later in October.

Adults will however still be limited to a maximum of 10 participants per club at one time, indoor training facilities will need to remain closed and equipment must be appropriately washed after use. Full Guidelines can be found HERE

This great win will see rowing clubs across Victoria returning to a degree of normality earlier than anticipated!

  Local Legend

Rowing Victoria's Weekly Local Legend - Josh Dunkley-Smith

This weeks local legend is Victoria's Josh Dunkley-Smith. Not only a Local Legend, but an international one too!

Josh's rowing career started when he was 15 rowing for school at The Geelong College. He then followed on to Club Rowing at Mercantile. Olympic inspiration started as young boy for Josh, he had grown up watching his own mother train and compete as an Olympic Sailer.

Josh made his first National Team Debut in 2009 at the Under 23 World Championships as the stoke of the Eight. From then on Josh's potential as a olympic athlete was undeniable. His First Olympic Games Debut was at London in 2012, as the Stroke of the Men's Four alongside Drew Ginn, they lead the crew to a Silver Medal. Dunkley-Smith was back again as the two seat in the Men's Four at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016. The crew also won a Silver Medal.

Josh is also well known for his incredible Ergo Scores. On Saturday, March 10, he broke the Men’s Heavyweight 2000 meter record at the 2018 Senior Australian Rowing Team Trials. The new fastest 2000 meter time on a Concept2 Indoor Rower is 5:35.8

After setting the world record, Dunkley-Smith made the suprising announcement that week that he will no longer be pursuing selection for the 2018 Australian Rowing Team. “I am unsure if I am going to retire, that is a big decision to make” he explains. For now, his focus is on his family. His name now in history Josh Dunkley-Smith will always be known as a truly remarkable athlete.
