Vale-  John Murphy

Dear members,

It is with sadness that we inform members of the passing of one of our long-standing members of Melbourne Rowing Club, John Murphy, Graeme Murphy's brother.

John followed Graeme down to Melbourne after he started coxing in 1965. John was a competitive Bowside sweeper and later took on sculling, mostly in crew boats. John was a lightweight with good endurance and rowed in many Melbourne crews over a ten-year period in the 1960's and 1970's. He started at Novice level and worked his way through Maiden, Junior, and Lightweight Maiden and Senior ranks, gravitating to Masters competition later on. His most recent races were as Cox of MRC Masters Eights in Head of the Yarra.

John was Hon. Treasurer, and Hon. Auditor at one time and had a Tub Scull named in his honour as a consequence.

In latter years, he really enjoyed riding with the Masters Men on their regular Saturday morning bike ride down to Rickett's Point for the obligatory coffee.

Rowing Victoria's Weekly Local Legend   -   David Fraumano

This week's local legend is Dave Fraumano, from Mercantile Rowing Club (VIC), and currently ACT Academy of Sport (ACT)

David started his rowing at Carey Grammar School where he coxed their first crew to second place.

Whilst still at school and then thereafter, he coxed at Mercantile and steered many crews. However, it was evident that his future was in coaching and the transition was quickly made in 2003 with rowers of the same age as himself. His last coxing gigs were the 2003 Mercantile crews and the 2003 Victorian youth eight.

David then set about building the knowledge and experience to be a senior coach and in the process obtained a Master’s degree in Applied Science ‘Sports Coaching’ from the University of Queensland.

During the next 17 years, he has coached countless school, club and National Championship winning crews, as well as athletes on to Victorian as well as Underage and Senior Australian Rowing Teams. He was the Victorian Penrith Cup coach from 2012-2015 and has been a resident U23 coach in at the Australian Institute of Sport preparing lightweight men for U23 Worlds and World University Games and coached at the U23 World Championships. He has also coached internationally at School level in the USA, and Club level taking Mercantile crews to successful campaigns at the Head of the Charles in Boston, and Henley Royal Regatta in the UK.

In 2012, Dave was appointed Head of Rowing at St Catherine’s School in Toorak, Dave built one of the most successful programs Schoolgirl Rowing programs in the country. In his time, St Catherine’s School Senior 1st 8+ has featured in 4 out of 6 Head of the Schoolgirls A Finals, won the 2016 National Schoolgirl 8+ Championship and achieved silver in the same event in 2018 and boasts one of the most talented coaching line-ups on the river bank.

In December 2019, Dave left his club and School positions and moved back to Canberra where he took the position of the High-Performance Head Coach of Rowing ACT and the ACT Academy of Sport Rowing Program. He’s presently enjoying coaching a very talented group of athletes and working with an expert support team at ACTAS, integrating S&C, Sports Science, Nutrition, Psychology and administrative staff.

Dave enjoys the challenge of building programs and working with individuals to get the best out of themselves whether they be coaches, athletes or support staff. He believes in a fun, challenging and supportive environment for all who he works with, assisting develop people holistically and over the long term.

Securing Your Regatta Marquee

A friendly reminder as we head into the busy regatta season that many regatta venues do not allow the use of pegs to secure your marquees/tents and they must be appropriately secured using adequate weights.

The Rowing Victoria Recommendations for the provision of weights to secure tent/marquees during events will be able to assist you in understanding which venues you are not allowed to use pegs and how much weight is required to safely secure your marquee.
